The Metro Kino is widely regarded as one of the finest cinemas in Vienna. The Filmarchiv Austria successfully acquired the building as its main screening location in the summer of 2002 and has been exhibiting innovative programmes here ever since. The history of the Metro Kino, which from the 1920s onwards was also used as a theatre, sets the scene in many ways for today’s high quality screenings. Built in the 19th century, the stunning auditorium provides an ideal backdrop for presenting the history of film right up to the present day.
At the heart of each monthly programme lie our retrospectives and seasons, which have transformed the Metro Kino very much into an open forum for the intensive discussion of Austrian cinema. The cyclical series Filmhimmel Österreich, for example, devotes itself to the history of Austrian cinema within the framework of 100 different programmes. In the series Faszination Filmarchivierung, the Filmarchiv Austria regularly screens archival work carried out as part of restorations, and our seasons are occasionally accompanied small exhibitions in the foyer or other areas of the cinema. Published every month, our generously illustrated film magazine filmarchiv gives detailed information on all current screenings and the numerous special events hosted by the Filmarchiv Austria. All books, videos and DVDs from the Filmarchiv Austria publishing programme can be purchased directly from our shop next to the box office.
Members of the Filarchiv Austria enjoy considerable reductions on the majority of events held at the Metro Kino.
Under new ownership and now showing a wide range of seasons the whole year round, the Metro Kino has established itself as a centre for film culture in the heart of Vienna. It also provides a superb location for festivals such as the Viennale and the Jewish Film Festival. The auditorium is available for hire.
