The Leutner CollectionRudolf Leutner was born on 11 April 1914 in Messern near Horn in Lower Austria and died on 8 January 1999 in Horn. He is considered one of the most important private film collectors in Austria. From a young age Leutner systematically collected photographs and carefully recorded the details of both individuals and films. This collection was disastrously destroyed in a bomb raid whilst he was working as a journalist in Vienna for the magazine Mein Film. Leutner started once again to assemble a film collection and, after the war, began moving within the film-making scene. Employed both as a dubbing artist at the studios in Rosenhügel and as a cast member with the legendary theatre Die Insel (today the Metro Kino), Leutner himself became an actor in demand. After much negotiation he decided to entrust his impressive collection to the Filmarchiv Austria in 1997 and supervised the re-establishment of his archive within the Audiovisual Centre Augarten. The Leutner Collection contains in the region of. 250 000 film-related images (photos of sets and stars, documents, etc.), a film library (approximately 5000 books as well as national and international film magazines), film and theatre programmes, production albums and an assortment of posters. Searching and using the archiveThe film library of the Leutner Collection can be viewed during the opening hours of the Department for Studies and Research.
