Cinema paraphernalia

Our extensive collection of cinema-related apparatus not only records cinema’s technical history but also presents us with information on past conditions within the areas of production, presentation and reception. A good example is the internationally distinguished collection of early cinema projectors (from the period 1896 to 1918) which documents the high level of technology employed in silent film screenings in the early days of cinema. Practically all major film projectors which functioned in Austrian silent film cinemas can be found in the collection and are, to a great extent, ready to operate. Further fascinating exhibits represent the history of the film copying machine (including amongst others a step printer from the company Ernemann from 1913) and camera technology. The collection also contains film cameras from the early years of silent cinema.

Searching and using the archive

Our collection of cinema paraphernalia is regrettably not open for public viewing. Individual visits to the depot can however be arranged.
