ZABRISKIE POINT bleibt ein Enigma, ist keine historische, aber eine Bewusstseinsschilderung von 1968. Um dies zu erreichen, distanziert Antonioni oft Bild und Handlung. »I never discuss the plots of my film … Until the film ist edited, I have no idea myself what it will be about. And perhaps not even then. Perhaps the film will only be a mood, or a statement about a style of life. Perhaps it has no plot at all.« Im Zusammenspiel der streckenweise allegorisch-visionären Bilder und dem vor allem von Pink Floyd dominierten Soundtrack nimmt der Film viel von späterer Videoclip-Ästhetik vorweg.
